Au cas où on le demande : voici mes découvertes beauté du mois de février
I feel like I could start the recap of every month the exact same : “this was a particularly rough one”. Confinement, isolation and constant struggle of wondering wtf is going on around us are obviously all taking a toll, but I feel like February is always the roughest one of the year. The darkness, the cold from outside and the blasting dry heat from our radiators just make it *that* much harder on our moods (and definitely on our skins). At a point where mine was basically shedding and sloughing off, here’s how I changed my skincare and makeup routines to make them overcome what we could all agree to describe as “the worst part yet”.
Skincare
The 10$ 1L serum (thank me later)
This tip is definitely for my DIY queens out there, who aren’t scared of experimenting a bit for the sake of good skin. I was inspired to play skincare chemist after watching a Hyram video basically listing ingredients that attract water to the skin, 3 of which I already had sitting around in my house in fairly large quantity. I decided to forgo the first, hyaluronic acid, which I do usually love but unfortunately 1- does not seem to be working out for me in the dry heat of my radiators and 2- costs more than 10x the price of the next two I’m about to mention : glycerin and aloe vera. You can get around 500 mL of each of these for a few bucks, at just about any drugstore. Mix equal parts in a cute recycled bottle (pictured : Glow Recipe) and shake well : instant, super cheap and effective moisturizing serum that’ll make sure your skin stays plump and juicy, always.
Slugging
There might be a chance that you’ve heard about this one on Tiktok - otherwise, let me put it real quick for you : slugging is a technique that calls for you to drench in so much occlusive product that (yes, that’s exactly where we’re going) you end up looking like a slug, usually using vaseline or another very thick product. Intrigued, I started using lanolips 101 multi-use ointment in quite a thick layer on top of my nighttime skincare lineup, in a hope that it would cure my then shedding forehead and in-between-the-brows skin. And thankfully it did, and I don’t have to carry on doing it, because it’s just as gross as it seems. First, my newly cut bangs keep getting stuck into it, treating me to more than my fair share of bad hair mornings, but I’m also convinced that the excess product smeared right on my pillow everytime I went to bed-O, wasting product, and in a larger sense, my time and sanity.
Makeup
Hydrating colour
There’s a chance you’ve heard that in a pinch, lipstick makes for great blusher, but it actually turns out that coloured lip-bam does the exact same, with the added benefit that it adds a layer of moisture on those plump cheeks. In one of my few public outings, I’ve had to fake that I had seen the colour of the sun recently, after a disappointing car-miror check. The only red that I could desperately find at the bottom of my tote was a jar of Rocky Mountain Soap Co. ‘s Lip Quench in Fresh Fig and I actually loved the fresh wash of bright colour so much that it became my blusher-of-the-month. Super fresh yo.
Highlight
I’ll make this one quick. It’s cold and we’re all looking ghoul, a little highlighter is the magic wand we all need. If you’re still wearing makeup, you’ve obviously diminished the amount of face products you’re using but consider whipping out that dusty old highlighter and giving it another chance, just for old time’s sake.
Bonus
What in the tropical forest is this?
It’s a humidifier. The one that had been forgotten and left to die in my parent’s basement. It’s also the best skincare “tool” I’ve added to my lineup this winter. I’ve been rambling about the dry heat from our radiators the whole time during this article and frankly, there’s one way to fix it : put water back into the air. Only at night, if you’d like, but for the sake of your skin, please do it. And let the change speak for itself.
